I’m a diehard expressionist painter. I really love the idea of making an original record of my existence. Some of the most renown painters are expressionists: Matisse, Picasso, de Kooning, Hockney. I love that they show me who they are more than what they paint. Total originals! I suppose this comes from my interest in psychology. I’ve been a practicing psychotherapist for as long as I’ve been a painter: 30 plus years. My life is about being authentically true to who you are in this world. I don’t always like what comes out of me artistically, but it’s almost always true, and I have to own that.
I paint in an “Action and Response” style. Each action I make, each brushstroke, each color choice, each spray of water demands a response. “What would make this work more interesting or more authentic?” Then a new color, or a new mark.
Joy and exuberance. Fun and games. But, wait. There’s always a bit of psychology in the mix. My themes are all about relationships and living life to its fullest. Look carefully and you’ll see undertones of identity and connection. I’m an expressionist painter—I love the idea of showing my particular and, perhaps, peculiar vision of a subject and I want to show you how it’s done. Every brushstroke shows how I was feeling and thinking about the image. I want my work to start conversations and inspire ways of thinking about one’s self.
